| God works powerfully in the desert. In the desert, God led his people out of slavery from Egypt. Stripped of food and shelter, the Israelites met their Lord, and he set them free (Exodus 14). In the desert, Jesus fasted and prayed as he contended with the devil (Matthew 4:1-11). He emerged victorious and began to work mighty deeds. The desert is a place of great difficulty, but one filled with deep encounters with God.
On today’s feast of the birth of John the Baptist, we remember that God led him to the desert to prepare him for his mission. Wearing uncomfortable camel’s hair and living on “locusts and wild honey” (Matthew 3:4), he made a deliberate choice to turn away from the comforts of the material world to experience God’s provision in the spiritual. John was known for seeking the Lord through fasting and prayer, and believers like us throughout the centuries have followed his lead. In these “deserts,” we can retreat from the world, fast from temporary comforts, and seek the eternal God. So often, our daily lives are filled with noise, distractions, and temptations that clutter our minds and muddy our spiritual senses. But as St. Augustine says, “Fasting cleanses the soul, raises the mind . . . , [and]scatters the clouds” of our fallen desires. Sometimes God calls us to deliberately reject the pleasures of the world to seek him. Other times we experience a “desert” simply through the difficulties in our lives. These hardships separate us from our usual means of comfort or sources of strength, but they can also stir up our longing for God. They can help us discover that God remains close to us, even amid our hardships, and that we can always depend on his grace. Today, thank God for the witness of John the Baptist. And the next time you come face-to-face with hardship, follow his example. Embrace the desert! Seek the Lord and discover all he that he has for you. “John, herald of the Messiah, pray for me that I may find grace in the desert.” |
Thiên Chúa hoạt động mạnh mẽ trong sa mạc. Trong sa mạc, Thiên Chúa đã dẫn dắt dân Ngài thoát khỏi cảnh nô lệ ở Ai Cập. Bị tước đoạt lương thực và nơi ở, dân Israel gặp Chúa của họ và được Ngài giải thoát (Xh 14). Trong sa mạc, Chúa Giêsu ăn chay và cầu nguyện khi chiến đấu với ma quỷ (Mt 4,1-11). Ngài đã chiến thắng và bắt đầu thực hiện những hành động vĩ đại. Sa mạc là một nơi vô cùng khó khăn, nhưng lại là nơi chứa đựng những cuộc gặp gỡ sâu sắc với Thiên Chúa.
Hôm nay lễ sinh nhật thánh Gioan Tẩy Giả, chúng ta nhớ rằng Thiên Chúa đã dẫn ông vào sa mạc để chuẩn bị cho sứ mạng của ông. Mặc bộ lông lạc đà khó chịu và sống bằng “châu chấu và mật ong rừng” (Mt 3,4), ông đã chủ ý lựa chọn rời xa những tiện nghi của thế giới vật chất để trải nghiệm sự quan phòng của Thiên Chúa về mặt tâm linh. Gioan nổi tiếng là người tìm kiếm Chúa qua việc ăn chay và cầu nguyện, và những người tin Chúa như chúng ta trong suốt nhiều thế kỷ đã noi theo sự hướng dẫn của ông. Trong những “sa mạc” này, chúng ta có thể rút lui khỏi thế gian, ăn chay những tiện nghi tạm bợ và tìm kiếm Thiên Chúa vĩnh cửu. Rất thường xuyên, cuộc sống hằng ngày của chúng ta tràn ngập tiếng ồn, sự xao lãng và cám dỗ làm xáo trộn tâm trí và làm mờ các giác quan tâm linh của chúng ta. Nhưng như thánh Augustinô nói: “Ăn chay làm sạch tâm hồn, nâng cao tâm trí. . . , [và] xua tan những đám mây” của những ham muốn tội lỗi của chúng ta. Đôi khi Thiên Chúa kêu gọi chúng ta cố tình từ bỏ những thú vui trần thế để tìm kiếm Ngài. Những lúc khác, chúng ta trải qua “sa mạc” chỉ vì những khó khăn trong cuộc sống. Những khó khăn này tách chúng ta ra khỏi nguồn an ủi hay nguồn sức mạnh thông thường, nhưng chúng cũng có thể khơi dậy lòng khao khát Chúa của chúng ta. Chúng có thể giúp chúng ta khám phá ra rằng Thiên Chúa vẫn ở gần chúng ta, ngay cả khi chúng ta gặp khó khăn, và chúng ta luôn có thể trông cậy vào ân sủng của Ngài. Hôm nay, hãy tạ ơn Chúa vì chứng tá của Gioan Tẩy Giả. Và lần tới khi bạn đối mặt với khó khăn, hãy noi gương ông ấy. Hãy chào đón sa mạc! Hãy tìm kiếm Chúa và khám phá tất cả những gì Ngài dành cho bạn. Lạy thánh Gioan, sứ giả của Đấng Thiên Sai, hãy cầu bầu cho con để con có thể tìm thấy ân sủng trong sa mạc. |
